It is a tropical plant and is native to Mexico and South America. Spirit weed is commonly used in Jamaica, and the wider Caribbean, for its well-documented medicinal properties; the plant has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Spirit weed is widely used throughout the Caribbean as a seasoning for a wide range of sauces, dishes and in the preparation and preservation of meat. The herb makes for a good culinary herb as it dries well and retains good flavour and colour. The leaves and root of the plant can also be eaten raw; some use this as a treatment for scorpion stings. The plant’s root and leaves can also be boiled as consumed as herbal tea. This tea is used to treat ailments such as the flu, constipation and pneumonia.
