Hear me world as I cry out in desperation, lend me your voices to cry out and protest against Bauxite Mining in Jamaica’s Cockpit Country.
Please help us to protect our most precious water shed, our last pristine rainforest, rare and endemic species inhabiting the Cockpit Country.
If we lose the Cockpit Country Jamaica will suffer unimaginable catastrophic environmental consequences.
Professors Thomas Lacher, Thomas Brinker, Jennifer Ogle, Dr. Colmore Christian, Dr. Lennox Honychurch lend me your voices in protest against this impending calamity hanging over the Cockpit country of Jamaica waiting to be unleashed. You are repositories of knowledge and you know what the dangers of Bauxite Mining are, if it is done in an environment such as the Cockpit Country.
Let us ask our government the following questions:
Are we going to have a situation where we open up the Cockpit Country to mining, make billions of dollars and the rivers will still run crystal clear uncontaminated and clean to the communities and then to the ocean?
Will we make billions of dollars and the soil will still remain free from the poisons in the disposed wastes?
Will we make billions of dollars and the quality of the air the people breathe will not be degraded and became a hazard to their health?
Will we make billions of dollars and no poisons will seep into the underground water reserves”
Will we make billions of dollars and there will be no negative impact on the forests and areas where the people grow their food?
Will we make billions of dollars and there will be no negative impact on the rare and endemic species which call the Cockpit Country home?
Will we make billions of dollars and after umpteen years have passed we can still speak of how pristine the the Cockpit Country is?
If all those questions are truthfully answered No, the most important question we need to ask is
are millions or billions of dollars worth the destruction of such a pristine environment?.
